A quick look at changes to Timeline- a new kind of user profile

Right since its beginning, your Facebook profile has been the avenue for you to tell your story to the people who matter. Users treat the social site as a place to share almost everything from the seemingly small stuff, like their instant thoughts on a just read article, to some of the most crucial events of their personal lives, such as the photographs of their family functions, the wedding or birth in their family.

But now you can ‘tell your story with a timeline’ in an effort from Facebook for ensuring the evolution of user profile. An official post elaborates on the idea to state: “In the early days, user profile on Facebook was rather basic – simply your name, a photograph, things like which school you, stuff that you would cover in the first few minutes after you met someone. Your profile evolved over time to better reflect how you as a person actually interact with your close friends. Now you can share photographs of something that you did last weekend, as well as updates about how you are feeling.”

According to Facebook, since the focus has gradually shifted to the most recent and pertinent things that users have posted, more important stuff at times can slip off the profile page. Your graduation’s photos are replaced by an update about what you had today for breakfast. If you are communicating with an old friend after a prolonged gap, how would you feel to find out merely what the person had had for breakfast? Wouldn’t you like to know about his or her future plans or a new dream job? Facebook explains:

“The way your profile works today, 99% of the stories you share vanish. The only way to find the posts that matter is to click ‘Older Posts’ at the bottom of the page. Imagine if there was an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect all your best moments in a single place. With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you’ve already shared. They don’t just vanish as you add new stuff.”

A few interesting features of timeline

  • It’s wider than your earlier profile, and is much more visual.  There is the bigger photo at the top for any of yours that put there.
  • Scrolling down past your cover, your, photos, posts and life events are visible as they took place in time. You decide what’s shown on your timeline. You can also star your favorites or hide certain things.
  • Your private activity log is the place to find all of the things shared. To feature any on your timeline just click on a post for your friends to view it, too.
  • A new kind of social app will allow you to display the things that you like the favorite, music, games, recipes etc on your timeline. You can find out what your friends are doing with these apps.
