Google recently introduced a new search tool on the platform known as Springboard. This tool is designed to conduct searches across Google’s collection of apps that includes Google Docs, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Photos, etc.

Besides being a search assistant, Springboard also proactively provides pretty handy, actionable information and suggestions. No such examples are provided as to what those suggestions may be.

Springboard is specifically so designed to cater to business oriented people who make use of Google’s productivity apps on a regular basis; especially the high performance driven tech savvy individuals.

As part of the announcement, the company also issued a major upgrade to Google Sites, which is a tool designed by Google for creating pages on the web. The update will help users to conveniently fetch information from other Google apps and flaunt responsive design for all web layouts.

As per reports, Google’s currently testing both Springboard and the Google Sites upgrade with a select bunch of users in Google’s early adopter campaign. At the I/O developer conference held earlier this week, Google revealed that it’s currently working on a voice-based messaging app assistant called Allo. Many thought that with the arrival of Allo, Google may bid adieu to Google Hangout, one of its other existing instant messaging app. But the company further clarified that Hangout will continue to exist even after Allo sees the light of day.

This means that the company intends to keep Hangout, despite knowing that the launch of Allo could possibly eat into Hangout’s audience. But the company stands to gain more, as the arrival of Allo could help Google win over an entirely new set of audiences; especially the frequent users of Apple’s iMessage and Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Messenger apps.

Talking about comparisons, Allo is essentially a search messaging app that uses Artificial Intelligence, whereas Hangout is an instant messaging app that allows users to send text and video messages. On one hand, Hangout audiences include both desktop and mobile users, while on the other hand Allo will be made available only to iOS and Android based users. Through the Hangout app, Google is catering to a completely different set of audiences as opposed to Allo, through which the company’s trying to reach out to a completely new set of audiences.

According to media reports, the company says that it will continue to invest in Hangout. Moreover, the company justifies its stand to keep running both the apps with its research that suggests there are a majority of users who prefer more than one app for messaging.

Also, the company intends to keep running the app for regular Hangout audiences who prefer to use the app to communicate at large with their co-workers, just like Google’s webmasters. But the others can look forward to the launch of Google’s new messaging app assistant “Allo”, in the near future.

April 21, 2015 is a date that a lot of businesses find hard to forget. The day is best remembered as the Mobilegeddon day, when Google rolled out a mobile friendly algorithm update which took a lot of businesses by surprise. And as they say, history repeats itself. Cometh April 18, 2016 Google will be updating the smartphone user-agent of Googlebot crawler from iPhone to Android platform. As such, businesses don’t need to worry because according to Google, the change in the user-agent will have no impact on 99% of the websites.

Yet to save themselves from future embarrassment, SMEs need to constantly monitor their website for changes taking place post Google user-agent update or better still, stay prepared well in advance to handle any changes that occur in Googlebot crawler update.

SMEs especially, need to watch out for this new Googlebot smartphone user-agent crawler updated string, which is as given below:

The updated string a bit different from the Googlebot smartphone user-agent string which is currently running, as shown below:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_3 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0 Mobile/12F70 Safari/600.1.4 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

As you can see, the only visible difference between the two strings is that in the first string Google replaced the Apple iPhone, and in the Safari string the user-agent has been replaced with Android and Chrome.

About the change in the user-agent, Google says it’s being done so that the renderer can adjust itself with pages that use new, evolving web technologies. Google added that the change was needed to keep up with the ever-evolving web technologies. The change in the user-agent string shows that it is more similar to Google’s Chrome than Apple’s Safari. However, Google says that the user-agent change will have no effect on 99% of businesses and that it’s only the remaining 1% of businesses, especially the SMEs, that needs to prepare in advance. Businesses can make use of Google’s Fetch and Render Tool to ensure that their online presence stays intact post the Googlebot crawler update on April 18, 2016.

Last week, Google rolled out an update to Google Now that allows users to customize their Google App experience. As reported by 9to5′s Social Media Channel, a mere tap on Google Now will display a range of animated logos. The users are not only allowed to select their favorite logo, but also to adjust the logo color according to their own tastes. Users can see their customized Google App version displayed at the top of the stream.

According to the 9to5Google.com report, users with Google App’s latest version installed on their devices can use the new and updated Google Now feature. So, if you’re bored of the Google App showing up in the same standard colors, then you can switch them to your own favorite ones by using the finger paint-like feature that is included within the app.

“Users will notice an enlarged Google logo that occupies the fill width of their device. At first it is shown in its normal colors, but it will slowly fade into white. Whatever part of the logo a user taps will be filled with a splotch of color. Every touch changes the color and by the end users will have a uniquely colored Google logo.”

As per 9to5Google.com, the slow to load app update will sport some new animated icons like a magnifying search glass, a musical note, eating utensils and other relevant search images instead of the animated blue circle that used to indicate search progress.

Google always puts user experience on the top of its priority list and the new update is a continuation of that process.

In 2015, iOS version of chrome was allowed to be indexed along with the Apple’s own web browser “Safari”. However, Safari arrived really late. Maybe because Safari was partying hard and passing out, I guess!

How does app indexing work?

Through sitemap or Google’s Webmaster Tools, Google can search out (index) in-app content. When someone searches for this content, present in the already installed app, the user gets the option to view that content directly from the app instead of viewing it in the normal mobile webpage.

If the website has the same content over their webpage and app both, then the app results will appear as deep links in the search results. If the user already has that app installed, then clicking on the deep link will redirect him to the app.


What is a deep link?

It’s not that deep that you can see Adele rolling in it. In fact, it’s a link that directs a user to a specific page where the desired content is available. And in the case of Mobile apps, it directs the user to that specific page in the app instead of the homepage.

How to let Google index your apps
